Family medicine vs internal medicine vs pediatrics
Family medicine doctors care for patients of all ages and can be the whole family's PCP. Internists (internal medicine) focus on adults and complex chronic conditions. Pediatricians care for infants, children, and teens. Geriatricians specialize in adults 65+.
What to look for
- Board certification in their specialty
- Accepts your insurance
- Accepting new patients
- Convenient location and hours
- Same-day or next-day sick visits
- Patient portal and telehealth options
- Hospital affiliations you'd want to use
Questions to ask before you commit
- How long do new-patient appointments take and how soon can I book?
- How do you handle after-hours questions?
- What's your approach to preventive care?
- Will I usually see you, or a different provider in the practice?
- How do you coordinate with specialists I see?
When to switch
If you feel unheard, can't get appointments when you need them, or the office is hard to reach — it's reasonable to switch. Request a copy of your medical records (or have them sent) and confirm your new doctor is in-network before your first visit.
