A framework for comparing two or three doctors before you book — credentials, reviews, fit, and cost.
The 5 things to compare
- Credentials — medical school, residency, board certification, years in practice
- Insurance — confirm in-network for your specific plan, not just the insurer
- Patient reviews — look for patterns across at least 20 reviews
- Practice details — location, hours, telehealth, patient portal, after-hours coverage
- Hospital affiliations — where they admit patients if you need surgery or hospitalization
Red flags in reviews
- Frequent mentions of rushed visits or poor communication
- Repeated billing disputes
- Disciplinary actions on the state medical board
- Pattern of canceled appointments or long waits
Green flags
- Multiple reviews mentioning the doctor listened and explained things
- Easy scheduling and responsive staff
- Active patient portal and quick message replies
- Long tenure at the same practice
