How to Find a Doctor That Accepts Your Insurance

Insurer directories are often outdated. Use this checklist to confirm a doctor is actually in-network for your plan.

Start with your member ID card

  • Plan name (e.g. "Aetna Open Access HMO," not just "Aetna")
  • Network name on the back of the card
  • Three-letter prefix for BCBS members
  • Group number for employer plans

Two-step verification

  1. Search the insurer's online directory for in-network providers near you.
  2. Call the office and read your exact plan name from the card. Networks within a single insurer can differ dramatically.

Red flags

  • Office says they "take" your insurance but won't confirm in-network status
  • Provider listed in the insurer directory but the office disagrees
  • Out-of-network bills after the visit — request a corrected claim
