Aetna plan types
Aetna offers many plans: HMO (in-network only, referrals needed), PPO (in-network preferred, out-of-network covered at lower rate), Open Access (in-network only, no referrals), and Medicare Advantage. Networks differ by plan — a doctor 'in network for Aetna' may not be in your specific plan.
Verify in-network status
- Search Find A Doctor Hub and filter by location and specialty.
- Cross-check using Aetna's online directory (Aetna DocFind) with your exact plan name.
- Call the doctor's office and confirm your specific plan name (not just 'Aetna').
- If unclear, call Aetna member services on the back of your card and ask them to confirm.
Watch for plan-specific networks
Aetna runs several narrow networks (e.g., Aetna Whole Health, Premier Care, Leap). These have smaller provider lists than the broad national network. Always check by your specific plan name.
If your doctor is out-of-network
You can usually still see them but at much higher cost. PPO plans cover some out-of-network care; HMOs typically don't. Ask Aetna about a 'gap exception' if no in-network specialist exists for your condition.
