How Blue Cross Blue Shield works
BCBS is a federation of 33 independent companies operating in different states (Anthem, BCBS of Texas, Highmark, CareFirst, etc.). Each runs its own networks, so a doctor in-network for one BCBS plan may not be for another.

- Check your BCBS company's online provider directory using your exact plan ID.
- Call the doctor's office with your full plan name (e.g., 'Anthem BCBS PPO of California, plan code XYZ').
- Confirm the practice is in-network, not just one specific provider.
BCBS Federal Employee Program
FEP Standard, FEP Basic, and FEP Blue Focus have a single nationwide network. If you're a federal employee, your card says 'Service Benefit Plan' — most doctors that take BCBS will take FEP, but always verify.
