Preventive Care Checklist by Age

Preventive care catches problems early — when they're easiest and cheapest to treat. Most preventive services are covered 100% by insurance when you see an in-network doctor.

Every adult, every year

  • Annual physical with primary care doctor
  • Blood pressure check
  • Flu vaccine each fall
  • Dental cleaning (twice a year)
  • Eye exam every 1–2 years

Ages 18–39

  • Cholesterol screening every 4–6 years
  • Cervical cancer screening (Pap) every 3 years starting at 21
  • STI testing as recommended
  • Mental health screening
  • Skin check if at risk

Ages 40–49

  • Discuss mammograms (women) with your doctor
  • Diabetes screening every 3 years
  • Discuss colon cancer screening at 45
  • Lung cancer screening if heavy smoking history
  • Bone health discussion

Ages 50–64

  • Colonoscopy or stool-based test
  • Mammogram every 1–2 years
  • Shingles vaccine (50+)
  • Lung cancer screening if eligible
  • Hepatitis C screening

Ages 65+

  • Annual wellness visit (Medicare)
  • Pneumonia vaccines
  • Bone density scan (women, every 2 years)
  • Cognitive screening
  • Fall-risk assessment
