10 Questions to Ask a Specialist

A specialist visit usually lasts 20–30 minutes. Going in with a written list keeps you focused and helps you remember everything afterward.

What's the most likely diagnosis, and what else could it be?

  2. 2

What tests do you recommend, and what will they tell us?

  3. 3

What are all of my treatment options — including doing nothing?

  4. 4

What are the risks, benefits, and side effects of each option?

  5. 5

How will we measure whether treatment is working?

  6. 6

How quickly should I expect results?

  7. 7

Are there lifestyle changes that could help?

  8. 8

What should I watch for that means I need to call you?

  9. 9

Who do I contact between visits, and how?

  10. 10

Is there a patient portal or printed material I can review at home?
